But I guess this stupidity and blind faith is part of human nature. Man has created god so that he can hide behind someone for HIS crimes, blame someone else for HIS lack of action, use someone else as an excuse to kill/destroy/party-poop. But you know what? Even I pray to god every night, but actually I guess that's just out of habit because I've never got what I asked for. But obviously I have to WORK towards getting what I want right? In that case what the hell does god have to do with that? Will he jump up and down screaming 'GO ISHAAN GO!!!' as I toil to reach my goal? Or is he the true 'Keeper of the Seven Keys'?
And for the few sensible people who are not religious, don't say so in public man!!!You have no shame. You have no direction in life.Because you can't contribute towards that religion that you 'rightly belong to' and more importantly, you're not secretly abusing every other fucking religion in this world.
Seriously,if global warming doesn't get there first, the world will implode because of religion.Mankind will cease to exist because everyone will kill off everyone else in the name of Jesus/Allah/Shiva etc. This thought is shared and expressed very beautifully in the form an album by power metal giants Iced Earth in 'Framing Armageddon (Something Wicked part 1)'. The story is such:
Framing Armageddon: Something Wicked Part 1 tells the story of the Setians, who were the original inhabitants of Earth, and are directly descended from the "Great Architect". They are said to have nearly omniscient knowledge. Humans, who have developed space travel, invade Earth in a bid for "ultimate power and ultimate knowledge", killing all but ten thousand Setians.
''The remaining ten thousand go into hiding in the mountains in the east. The Setian High Council, which consists of the twelve Elders and the High Priest, make a plan to get revenge on the invading human race. They plan to initiate "The Clouding", which involves brainwashing all the humans and making them forget their origins. Once completed, the Setians will manipulate history by creating religions--Christianity, Islam, Judaism, etc.,--to further divide the humans. Once human kind is sufficiently divided, after ten thousand years, the Setians will await, as the prophecy told millennia ago, the birth of the Antichrist, Set Abominae. Set Abominae will destroy all of the human race and execute the revenge the Setians have long awaited.
Framing Armageddon tells the story from the prophecy to the events right before the birth of Set Abominae.''
Set Abominae is Iced Earth's mascot BTW.

Wait.
It's not religion that's causing the chaos. Religion in it's purest form does not advocate any sort of hatred or intolerance. It is US, human being, who have used it for our own vested interests. THAT is the problem.
Secondly, GOD may not be a person up there in the sky egging you on. BUT, for all those who believe in him, he is some form of solace, a crutch in troubled times, how can you deny people that? God or no god, there is some superior force guiding our lives - fate, destiny, karma. Call it whatever you want, most of us believe in it na?
And hey, don't diss anything just because it doesn't seem right to you na. Relaigion exists basically because it fulfills the primary need of human beings, to believe, to follow. In worshipping God, we are sort of worshipping the moral order of society itself. So if we find fault with it, we are findiong fault with the society we live in. And that CAN be fixed without 'exterminating' religion. It doen't have to rend our society into piecees, It can bring us together, we just have to find a way. Till then, well, you can rant against it. But think of the countless people for whom God is the 'Supreme One', the 'Guiding Force'. Are they ALL wrong?
P.s. I love you :)
Religion is not something that existed before man appeared on Earth,it was created by man.Hence, religion itself as a concept is the problem.
Sure, there are people for whom God is the final salvation etc,etc but that only strengthens my 'other person' persona of god. They need someone to rant to,someone to cry to,someone to blame. So they create God.
Religion can never bring society together because no matter how much every religion preaches tolerance towards others, there's always an intrinsic doubt about other religions.Always some sort of competition. And it IS tearing society apart.People cannot eat certain kinds of food when they are with people of other religions, they don't follow certain customs that may end up being standard procedure at some places etc.
And I love you too.
1. No it isn't. NO religion advocates hatred. We created something pure and messed it up. But as I said before, sociologically speaking, religion has functional utility, as long as people in society rely on it, it cannot be done away with. It's impossible.
2. So it's okay if God= the 'other person'. If that's what works for people, why not? We're not all invincible. Sometimes we need a crutch.
3. Not eating certain foods or following certain is a matter of personal choice na? As much as your choice of music, clothing etc. is completely upto you. And relaigion is not static. If certain customs become oppressive or static, they change over time. Not immediately of course, but nothing is perfect.
I like arguing with you baby :)
I'm not speaking from a sociology textbook's POV,I'm speaking based on what I see.And I'm pretty sure what I see does not have a hidden truth.I have not seen religion unite at all.In fact,if you're talking about close friendships that are inter-religious,its because those involved have banished the idea of who belongs to what religion.
When religious constraints become a hindrance to society, they stop being comparable to choice of clothing/music or any such thing.Avoid eating something if you don't like it,not because supposedly someone that may not exist may get pissed off if you eat it.Ditto everything else.
I have never seen a religious practice being changed to accommodate society. Its just not practised altogether by a majority of the community.
This is not a textbook view, religion exists and will continue to exist for its utility.
I admit, religious fundamentalism exists, but as much as relaigion tears people apart, it binds them together as well. And that solidarity that arises from religion cannot be replaced by anything else.
And no, not following a few customs is not anti-relaigious. A belief in God and respect for the majority of what one's relaigion says will suffice. In fact, can't you be anti-religious and still believe in God? That's personally how I feel. I'm part Buddhist, prt Hindu so customs and traditions apart, I do belive in God, the superior force that guides our lives.
And religion has changed over history. It has. Hasn't Christianity mellowed down for example?
Oh!
well continuing 4m whr Ki left it. yes, religion is manipulated acc 2 convinience, its the faith thats more important than customs.
well, a very good attempt and very intriguing. But I fail 2 agree..
*~* Raj thakery is a MF, but do you have any idea abt wht he talks? his ideologies, I support, despite being a non-marathi who speaks better marathi than half the mharashtrians. implementation-e problem ache, but he is no-where related to religion.
*~* Its all upto the believer. How we take religion to be. not believing in god and not being religious are 2 different things. inter-related but diffent. I just hope I am on the right track :-P
see, ppl suit their belief. no1 is asking u 2 believe in something u dont; customs, religions are part of the society. Not saying its all right, but do we always care abt wht is right n wht is not? its just a matter of perception.
can't think of many things, ki said so much! I don't replicate her views, but v r definately on the same side [again ;-)]
hope i din disrupt pvt discussion
:-D
Express: *high five* And you didn't interrupt at all! Another few comments and we may've had a fight on our hands! :)
Ishaan: Ha! :P
But yes, faith, belief, they cannot be done away with although I do agree that we could do without certain oppressive aspects of religion. But a world with NO religion? I don't think so.
And this IS getting tiresome, we're clearly NOT going to agree. So truce, okay? (love)
While I do understand what Ki and Express are trying to say, I still agree pretty much with the post. Religion is a Creation, it is man-made, pretty much like art.
However, people soon forget the artificiality of religion and accept it as the Truth (which it certainly is not). Of course, each religion has its different version of Truth and that gives people an opportunity to make enemies of people not according to their religion.
P.S. My latest post is partly a consequence of reading this post.
Thank you Alok!!!May the Force be with you.
i was just reading your blog...the bit about religion...you've written that religion has given nothing to the world apart from war.etc.etc..if it wasn't for religion we wouldn't have metal, especially black metal, even the other forms of metal wouldn't be what they are today if it wasn't for religion..so religion has given us something good.We wouldn't even have satanism an all that stuff if it wasn't for religion..so in way..the metal that we listen to today is like that because of religion.
